Checklist for PORTFOLIO STUDENTS Requesting to Take Equipment Out Over Break

In order to check equipment out from the Cage over the break, senior level students need to:

· Provide proof that you are a student enrolled in a portfolio level class by providing the Cage Manager with a copy of your schedule for next quarter.

· Submit a typed, detailed list of the equipment you are requesting as well as a detailed proposal outlining your portfolio project. This should be in the form of an artist statement (GOOGLE it if you don’t know what one is). Please proof read this before submission. It will be rejected for obvious grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and if it is not in an artist statement format. It’s kind of a big deal.

· Everything has to be approved by the Cage Manager BEFORE you take this checklist to your AD.

· Return completed checklist along with all materials/signatures to the Cage Manager no later than Friday of Week 10 (June 10, 2011). No exceptions.

New Lab Usage Policy:
Any lab card signed out from the Sixth Floor Cage now has a 2 hour time limit attached to it. If you do not renew or return a lab card within the time limit you will be charged a late fee for it. This new policy will help keep labs available for students to complete their assignments in a timely manor. Please ask a Sixth Floor Cage Associate if you have any questions.

Welcome to 2011. The Cage will be open for business Monday January 10, 2011, from 7:30am - 9:45pm. Students will be allowed to check out equipment and labs. Some changes have been made to the Sixth Floor Labs. Please note: The Cage will be closed for a half hour (12:00pm - 12:30pm) for a staff meeting on Monday January 10, 2011.

All computer stations in Room 606 (the old Stop Motion Room) are now monitored by the Cage. If you wish to use one of these stations you must check out a lab card from the Sixth Floor Cage.

New Fine System Breakdown

· LATE FINES now start at $10 & increase $5 an hour.

o The new prices are NOT retroactive. Any fine accrued before October 4, 2010 are still under the old pricing system.

· LAB CARDS & WEEKEND RESERVATION FINES are still set at $25.

· GENERAL POLICY VIOLATIONS are still set at $25.

o This includes:

§ Using a lab without a lab card

§ Damaging Cage Equipment

§ Being rude towards Cage Staff

§ Eating or Drinking in the labs

§ Cutting in line, dropping equipment and not waiting for it to be checked in, etc.

Bjorn Lomborg is adjunct professor at the Copenhagen Business School and director of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, which brings together some of the world's top economists, including five Nobel laureates, to suggest priorities for solving the world’s most pressing problems. Time magazine named Lomborg one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2004. In 2008, he was named “one of the 50 people who could save the planet” by the British newspaper The Guardian, “one of the top 100 public intellectuals" by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazine, and “one of the world's 75 most influential people of the 21st century” by Esquire.
Lomborg’s 2007 book Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalists Guide to Global Warming, in which he challenged conventional wisdom about the best ways to deal with climate change, is the inspiration behind a documentary film of the same name, directed by Ondi Timoner, that was selected to premiere at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.
Lomborg first came to prominence in 2001 with the publication of his best-selling book The Skeptical Environmentalist, in which he argued that while pollution and other environmental woes needed to addressed, real progress had been made and the situation was not nearly as dire as many activists maintained. The book, which led the World Economic Forum to select him as a Global Leader for Tomorrow, inspired intense debate and still provokes strong feelings nearly a decade later.
Ever since then, Lomborg has been a frequent participant in public debate about climate change and global economic priorities. His commentaries have appeared regularly in such publications as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Time, Newsweek, The Economist, Forbes, Le Monde, Toronto Globe & Mail, Washington Post, The Guardian, The Daily and Sunday Telegraph, The Times of London, The Australian, the Los Angeles Times and the Boston Globe. Born in Denmark in 1965, Lomborg earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen. During this period he was named by Business Week as one of the nine top “agenda setters” in Europe. Essentially, he asked these experts to tackle the question: With limited resources, how can we do the most good possible?

Fall Quarter New Fne Policy

Beginning this quarter we are changing our fine system at the Cage. If a patron returns equipment late their fine will begin at $10.00 (no longer $25.00). The fine will increase $5.00 an hour after the due time.

We are back on our normal operating schedule now. The Cage will open at 7:30 am Monday - Friday. All equipment will be due at 8:00 am the following business day (with the exception of weekend checkouts).

2 More Film Screenings at AiPH

Faith Akin's new film "Soul Kitchen" Screening at AiPH

German filmmaker Faith Akin will be showing his new film Soul Kitchen at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. The screening will take place on August 11, 2010 in room 702 beginning promptly at 12:30pm.

The director will be holding a Q&A following the screening at Drexel University in the Ruth Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

Anyone who attends the screening is welcome to attend the Q&A at Drexel afterward.

HPX 300 Workshop for DFVP & VEMG Students

Director Todd Solondz coming to AiPH Monday July 26th to screen his new film!

Todd Solondz will be screening his new film for Art Institute Students on Monday at noon in Room 702 (the room may change). He will be doing a Q&A after the screening of the film. Here's a bit of background on him and the film. Hope you can make it.

Director Todd Solondz is best known to audiences for making dark, thought-provoking, socially conscious, satirical independent films such as Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness. Now the director returns to the genre he knows so well with his latest film, Life During Wartime opening on July 23rd, which is not exactly a sequel to his previous films but does center around many of the same characters that are featured in Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness, with different actors playing those roles. We recently had a chance to speak with director Todd Solondz about his new film, its connection to his past films, the cast and what's next for the talented director. Here is what he had to say:

To begin with, could you talk about your new film, "Life During Wartime" and it's relationship to your past films, "Happiness" and "Welcome To The Dollhouse?" Is it a direct sequel to "Happiness" or just a continuation of some of the themes that you have touched on before in your other movies?

Todd Solondz: Sure, the movie contains many of the characters and the storylines that have been established in the movie Happiness. It includes a couple characters from Welcome to the Dollhouse and other characters that existed in none of my prior work. All of the characters have been recast from earlier work. So you have Michael K. Williams playing the Philip Seymour Hoffman part, Paul Reubens is Jon Lovitz, Ally Sheedy as Lara Flynn Boyle, Allison Janney as Cynthia Stevenson and so forth. I wanted to have the freedom with this recasting to get a new stage of meeting and color and examine this from another perspective. It gives it new life and to be able to play some of these storylines in ways that I couldn't if I had some sort of literalness of what I'd established in the earlier work.

So what kind of fresh perspective were the "new" actors able to bring to these established characters?

Todd Solondz: Well for example, Jon Lovitz is a very funny, comedic actor and Paul Reubens in his own way as well. What I liked about Paul Reubens in this movie is, of course Paul also has a whole history that people are aware of that lends an extra poignancy and sorrow in the performance. Ciarán Hinds who plays Dylan Baker's part acts with a great amount of weight, of gravitas. He's kind of a shell, a husk of a stencil of a dead man walking. I'm able to achieve things that would be different if I had Dylan Baker. Of course Michael K. Williams is far as you can get from Philip Seymour Hoffman. No one will think, "Oh it's like Philip Seymour Hoffman" if I didn't want anyone to evoke him and of course the story gets to take on a different color because of the cast. We wrote it accordingly. So it allows me a lot of freedom to play with the story instead of having to stick to things that already preexisted.

So I had so much fun with all of them. They are all great. They are so generous and courageous. They're all my favorites. It's like when you listen to a piece of music you fall in love with. You can't imagine any piece of music being any better and that's the way it is with this cast. I felt that way about the cast of Happiness too.

What is it about these characters that has forced you to gravitate back to them time after time?

Todd Solondz: Well you know it's always a mystery to me. Look, I never imagined I would write any sequel to Happiness. I never imagined I'd ever revisit these characters and stories, but I was wrong! I lacked the imagination and the foresights. Ten years later I found myself writing the first scene of the movie, I liked what I had written and I said, "Is there a movie here? Is there stuff to explore that I haven't already explored?" I felt that the answer was yes. This is very much a post 9/11 movie. It's a kind of post-traumatic stress disorder genre kind of film. With different kinds of themes and a tone that perhaps is a little more melancholy than acid.

Could you talk about the meaning behind the title of the film?

Todd Solondz: Well of course we of live during war. We have the global reality of wartime but it relates of course to the war that exists amongst our intimates within ourselves. I have a song composed to this that is sung in the film such as "Happiness" was a song that was sung in that film.

Looking forward, now that you've finished this trilogy of films, what do you think will be the ultimate legacy of "Welcome To The Dollhouse," "Happiness" and "Life During Wartime?"

Todd Solondz: Well legacy, I don't like to think to ... it's too suggestive of like going; you know getting buried or something. I mean my life's not quite over. I'd like to imagine I'd make another movie. Look, when I go to the movies I like to be provoked, I like to get stimulated. I like to have a good time. I like to laugh. I like to have fun. I like to be moved. That's what I look for in a movie and that's all I can hope for that my movies can do that as well.

Finally, are you still planning on making the film "Dark Horse?" Is that going to be your next film?

Todd Solondz: Yes, I'm casting now as we speak and plan to shoot this fall.

Life During Wartime opens on July 23rd, 2010 and stars Shirley Henderson, Michael K. Williams, Roslyn Ruff, Allison Janney, Michael Lerner, Dylan Riley Snyder, Ciarán Hinds, Renée Taylor. The film is directed by Todd Solondz.

Welcome to Summer Quarter 2010! Here are some changes that are happening at the Sixth Floor Cage:

All equipment checked out is due back by 7:30am the following day during the summer quarter. NOT 8:00am. The Cage opens at 7:00am to give students a half hour window to make sure their equipment is returned on time.

New Equipment
HPX 300s - for Videography Level students. Here is a great article about the HPX300 being used in detail for a project. HPX300 Production Diary.

New Wireless ENG Mic Kits - These kits contain a wireless Sennheiser Wireless G3 mic pack, receiver pack, RE50B hand held mic & SPK 100 plug.

Dyna-lite 2000 watt Studio Kits - We now have 2 new Dyna-lite studio kits. They are 2000 watt studio lighting kits. They are not to be mixed with our 250 watt Dyna-lite kits.

Arri Softbank Kits - We have 2 Arri Softbank kits. These kits contain 2 x 650w lamps, 1 x 300w lamp & 1x 1,000w lamp with a softbox & ring.

It's finally Week 11! I hope everyone is doing well on their finals. The Sixth Floor Cage will be closing at 8:00pm this Friday (6-18-10). The Cage will be closed during the break. We will reopen the first day of Summer Quarter (7-12-10) at 7:00am! That's right! Our operating hours change during the summer quarter. Mon - Friday 7:00am - 9:45pm. All overnight equipment is due by 7:30am during the summer.

Rejoice DFVP & VFX Students! The Panasonic HPX 500 P2 camera's have been authorized for overnight checkout! The cameras are now due back before 8:00am the following day Monday - Friday and are due back before 8:00am Monday morning for weekend checkouts. You will still need to be enrolled in Senior Project Production or Visual Effects Portfolio Development to be authorized to check these cameras out.

Correction about classes being held tonight

Apparently there has been some confusion about what is actually going on this evening. I just got off the phone with a security guard in the main building. He informed me that there will only be classes in 2300. 1622 & 1610 Chestnut St. will be locked down at 6:30pm.

So, the Sixth Floor Cage WILL NOT be open this evening. We will be open Saturday 8:00am - 4:45pm. All outstanding equipment WILL BE DUE BACK BY 12:00PM on Saturday. The Cage Staff will still be making phone calls to inform all students about this.

I apologize about the confusion.

Friday Feb. 12th - School Closing

Friday February 12th is a school holiday. There are no classes and the Cage, library, computer labs and shops will be closed. All weekend reservations will be available for pick up Thursday February 11th after 12:00pm.

The Art Institute of Philadelphia is canceling all evening classes on Friday, February 5th, all classes on Saturday, February 6th and all classes on February 7th due to inclement weather.

The Sixth Floor Cage will be closing early tonight, Friday, February 5th, at 6pm. The Sixth Floor Cage will also be closed on Saturday and Sunday. All weekend reservations will be due Monday, February 8th, by 8am.

E-mail Problem Work Around

Steve Shandor offers these hints for students having trouble getting to their student email after logging onto http://MyAiCampus.com:

What most students are encountering is the pop-up blockers on their Web browsers BLOCKING the pop-up window which opens when they click on the Gmail Email button after logging onto MyAiCampus.com .

On the home page, there is information about this problem , including a link to a “Troubleshooting” document (http://imageservers.edmc.edu/googleapps/help/Troubleshooting.pdf ) which discusses how to turn off pop-up blockers.

The most difficult problems with this seem to come with MAC / Safari users. To get rid of pop-ups there (as you will see from those “Troubleshooting” instructions), you actually have to change Safari’s preferences globally. For both IE and Firefox you can allow pop-ups specifically for http://MyAiCampus.com .

Also – the computers in the labs are set to block pop-ups as the default, so that means the first person on each computer every day is going to have to disable the pop-ups.

Please spread the word about how to get around these pop-up blocker problems.

The Last Day of the Quarter

Weekend Reservations

Greetings denizens of AiPH! Your friendly neighborhood Assistant Cage Manager here to tell you a little something about WEEKEND RESERVATIONS! Last quarter we posted signs and a blog that detailed a new policy that is going into effect as of this weekend.

If you make a Weekend Reservation and either:

Do not cancel your request by closing time (4:45pm) on Sunday
Do not pick up your reservation at all

...you will be subject to a $25.00 Denial fee. It's not fair to keep equipment tied up all weekend with your name on it when other students could be using it. To cancel a request just call the Sixth Floor SuperCage at 215-405-6403 and ask to cancel your Weekend Reservation. So remember kids, pick up your reserves!

The Cage will be closed Easter Weekend...Friday April 10th - Sunday April 12th. Weekend equipment can be picked up after 12:00pm today April 9th. All equipment will be due before 8am on Monday April 13th.

The Cage will not be allowing equipment to go out over the upcoming 1 week break. This includes all Faculty, Staff, and Portfolio Students. When the school is out on break for 1 week we need all of our equipment so we can preform the most accurate inventory possible.

614 Regulations Starting Next Quarter!

614 is a green screen studio for chroma-key shoots that may be used by DFVP, VEMG and MAA departments. Reservations for room 614 will continue to be signed out at the Cage. Reservations may be made outside of class time. The space is to be used for homework and class assignments. Reserved time-slots will be forfeited if the student does not claim the space 15 minutes after the original time for check in.

Faculty:

The Kino Flo lights are to be used for SHOOTING VIDEO ONLY! Do not use the lights as classroom lights or FOR PHOTOGRAPHY!

DFVP, VEMG AND MAA Students:

Please use this space to shoot chroma-key footage. The space may also be used for standard video shoots that require additional chroma-key footage. To be used for SCHOOL PROJECTS ONLY!

Photography Students:

Please utilize rooms 610, 611, & 615 BEFORE reserving 614. The space will still be available to Photography students ONLY if the other studio spaces are checked out. Please be respectful to the needs of others. This room has tech specific equipment in it.

Administration has altered the policy on who can take out the HVX 200s and when. The new policy is as follows: ANY student enrolled in VIDEOGRAPHY may take the HVX 200 out outside of class time to complete any homework assignments.

As always, make sure you have your schedule and ID when visiting the Cage so we can confirm that you are enrolled in the proper classes to take out the "privileged" equipment.

Digital Photo Cameras

There is often much confusion on who gets what when it comes to digital cameras.

Photography students will no longer receive compact flash cards from the cage. You MUST have your own.

Canon Rebel
The Canon Rebels and XT's are available to any student, where as the Canon Rebel XTI's are reserved for Graphic Design students only.

We also have the Fuji Finepix s9000 Digital camera for students when the Rebels are not available.

Canon 5D
This camera is for photography students only. You must be enrolled in the Architecture classes or upper lever photo classes such as portfolio 1. This camera is a full frame DSLR which is meant to be used with the 24mm TSL, 45mm TSL, and the 100mm Macro L lens. We only have Four 5D's so please bare with us until more are ordered.

Currently we are down to 3 5D's, one is out being cleaned because it was filthy, so take good care of our equipment.

503 Hasselblad and H3D
These cameras are to be used for John McFarlan's Location class and Architectural classes, which is where you learn how to use these cameras. They are also available for upper portfolio students.

The H3D has several lenses that can be used with it.
28mm Super Wide lens
80mm Standard lens
120mm Macro lens
150mm Tele-photo lens
210mm Tele-photo lens

The 503 Hasselblads come with a 80mm standard lens.

The digital Hasselblads have a laptop which is used to download and convert the raw Hasselblad files.

Zoom Lenses and Speed Lights
We have two zoom lenses which can be used on any Canon camera.
The first is a 28-135mm lens
The second is a 70-300mm lens
These lenses are available to any photo student.

For those of you needing a small portable flash, we have several Canon SB580's.
These Speed Lights are for photo students only.

Dyna-lites

Over this past break we placed a very nice order of Dyna-Lite accessories.

We ordered...
Two 22" Mola Beauty Dishes
Ten 18" Reflectors
Ten 45 Degree Long Throw Reflectors
Twenty Barn Doors
Twenty sets of Grid Spot Kits
And Two 40-40 Dyna-Lite Heads

Now, there are some rules to these new pieces of equipment...

All of the new Reflectors and Dishes must be used with the new 40-40 Dyna-Lite Heads.
In order to sign out and use this new equipment YOU MUST be in one of Phil Drucker's Studio classes or John McFarlan's Location class. Of course upper level portfolio students may also use this new equipment.

We only have Two 40-40 Heads for the time being, but we will have Five dedicated kits in the coming quarters. So currently, If you sign out the 22" Mola Beauty Dish you must sign out a normal 20-40 Dyna-Lite kit and a 40-40 Dyna-Lite Head. This head plugs into the power box of the 20-40 Dyna-Lite kit, and works just like a normal light.

THE NEW 22" MOLA BEAUTY DISH AND 18" REFLECTOR DO NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING.
THEY ARE DUE BACK BEFORE THE CAGE CLOSES EVERY DAY.

The Grid Spot kits and Barn Doors can be used by anyone.

And welcome to the Art Institute of Philadelphia's 6th floor Rage Cage Page.

This Blog will be used to let students know whats going on at the 6th floor Super Cage.
We will update this page with the arrival of new equipment.
Students will use this page as a way to find out what equipment we have for what major.

Remember!

NO ID, NO SCHEDULE = NO EQUIPMENT!
All equipment is due back before 7:30am Monday through Friday.
If you take out equipment Friday morning it is due back before Noon of the same day.

NO EXCEPTIONS!

Otherwise if you fail to observe and obey these times you will have a $25 fine which will continue to go up $1 every hour.
